🏛 College Admissions & Scholarship Tips
📋 Median GPA at Top Schools
Most Ivy League schools report median GPAs of 3.9+. State flagship universities typically admit students with 3.5–3.8 GPA. Community college transfers need 3.0+.
⚖️ Weighted vs. Unweighted
Many colleges recalculate your GPA on their own scale. A rigorous course load with AP/IB courses (even with a B) is often viewed more favourably than all-As in standard courses.
💰 Scholarship GPA Thresholds
Most merit scholarships require 3.0 minimum. National Merit and similar programs need 3.8+. Federal financial aid (Pell Grant) is not GPA-based, but satisfactory academic progress rules apply.
📈 Upward Trend Matters
Colleges notice grade trends. A GPA that rises from freshman to senior year shows growth. A downward trend raises red flags. Write about challenges honestly in your application essays.
🎯 GPA vs. Test Scores
Many schools have gone test-optional. GPA is the single strongest predictor of college success and is weighted most heavily. Extracurriculars and essays complement a strong academic record.
🔄 Retaking Courses
Some schools replace the old grade with the new one; others average both. Check your school’s policy. Retaking a C or D in a prerequisite before applying to college can significantly boost your GPA.
